Announces Its House Concert Series for the First Half of 2008

Multi-instrumentalist Harvey Reid returns to the Center
for Folk Music for his third appearance. Reid’s skills and versatility
on the guitar alone mark him as an important voice in acoustic music.
He won the 1981 National Fingerpicking Guitar Competition and the 1982
International Autoharp competition. Yet he’s also a veteran musician
with a long list of studio and band credits, a strong flatpicker, a versatile
and engaging singer, a powerful lyricist, prolific composer, arranger
and songwriter, a solid mandolin and bouzouki player, and a seasoned performer
and entertainer. And he plays the 6-string banjo and the autoharp like
you’ve never heard. Order your tickets soon, shows with Harvey
always sell fast.
Friday, January
25 at 8:00 pm (A Special Event, see below)
Jay Ungar & Molly Mason are extraordinary musicians.
If you didn’t know it before, you sure did after Ken Burns’
The Civil War hit the airwaves. Their performance of Jay’s haunting
composition Ashokan Farewell — the musical hallmark of the PBS series
— earned the couple international acclaim. The soundtrack won a
Grammy and Ashokan Farewell was nominated for an Emmy. Jay and Molly are
musicians of enormous talent who draw their repertoire and inspiration
from a wide range of American musical styles—19th-century classics,
lively Appalachian, Cajun, and Celtic fiddle tunes, and favorites from
the golden age of country and swing—along with their own songs,
fiddle tunes, and orchestral compositions. "On stage, Mason and
Ungar complement each other like a finely crafted fiddle and bow. Together
they weave a rich postmodern musical magic carpet on which listeners may
vicariously glide back in time and experience first-hand the sonorous
riches of traditional music." — David S. Rotenstein, Pittsburgh
Post-Gazette. Their show at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts
sold out the same day that the tickets when on sale, so be sure to get
your tickets soon!
If you play an instrument, on Thursday, January 24, at 7:30 pm,
Jay & Molly will hold a special workshop for all acoustic instruments.
They are also known as enormously talented teachers. Jay’s Ashokan
Fiddle & Dance Camps, have been a world-renowned destination for enthusiasts
of American music and dance traditions since the early 80’s, and
are still going strong.

Celebrate St. Patrick day a little early this year with Tommy
Sands direct from Northern Ireland! Tommy, Co Down’s singer,
songwriter and social activist, has achieved something akin to legendary
status in his own lifetime. From the pioneering days with the highly influential
Sands Family, bringing Irish Music from New York’s Carnegie Hall
to Moscow’s Olympic Stadium, he has developed into one of the most
powerful songwriters and enchanting solo performers in Ireland today.
His songwriting, which draws the admiration of Nobel Poet Laureate Seamus
Heaney and father of folk music Pete Seeger, prompts respected US magazine
“Sing Out” to regard him as “the most powerful songwriter
in Ireland, if not the rest of the world”. His songs, like There
were Roses, and Daughters and Sons, which have been recorded by Joan Baez,
Kathy Matthea, Dolores Keane, Sean Keane, Frank Patterson, Dick Gaughan,
The Dubliners and many others have been translated into many languages
and are currently included in the English language syllabus in German
secondary schools. “Tommy Sands has achieved that difficult
but wonderful balance between knowing and loving the traditions of his
home and being concerned with the future of the whole world”
— Pete Seeger

Andrew Calhoun is disarmingly unpretentious, spontaneous, insightful and
darkly witty on stage. Andrew writes songs with a paradoxical combination
of incandescent intellect and unstudied magic. He is both a lightning
rod for “the unconscious rightness of intuitive connection”
and a perpetual student of songcraft with deep respect for both tradition
and innovation. In live performances he weaves a tapestry that includes
not only his original songs, but Scottish ballads that he has translated
from dialect, and poems and songs by such exceptional writers as Dave
Carter, Mary Oliver and Robert Frost. “A wonderful songwriter
and funny, warm performer.” - The Daily Iowan. “He’s
blessed with a resonant baritone, crystalline fingerpicking, and a writer’s
ear.” — The Oregonian. This will be rare west coast appearance
for Andrew – don’t miss it.

Michael Young is a fingerstyle guitarist who plays both
the six and twelve string guitar with driving rhythm and groove, and he
carries that bouncy and energetic groove from powerful and compelling
compositions to soulful ballads. Moving from daunting and alarming to
lighthearted and idiosyncratic instrumentals, Michael takes advantage
of the guitar’s possibilities by combining standard and alternate
tunings with a mix of slide guitar into his playing. While primarily an
instrumentalist, Michael also incorporates his warm singing voice into
his sets. "Michael was wonderful on Saturday night. Everyone
loved him; what an entertainer. He was a great inspiration, especially
to other artists. At such a young age, he can captivate an audience of
any age." — Julie Dregne,The Little Theater, New London,
MN
